Forcing myself to watch Twilight, part 2

3 May, 2012 1 comment

This is late, but god damn it if I’m not putting it on my blog. Click here for the first entry in this blog series. I actually watched this movie back during the Christmas break and I tweeted my way through it. Here are those tweets. Hint: I didn’t like this one either.

Alright, starting up Twilight: New Moon for the first time. Let’s see how bad it is…

Wow, that was sure a gentle “shove” across the fucking room that Edward gave Bella. Matrix time and all.

Edward has actually been passable so far and I like how he just laughs at Bella’s fear of aging at age 18.

That’s her entire motivation. She wants to stay young because she thinks that Edward won’t love her otherwise. She has no other worthwhile..

..features about herself, at least in her own opinion. How fucking shallow can a writer be? A female writer at that! #antifeminism #twilight

The whole crux of this series is the shallowness, the entire lack of motivation behind any “love”/whatever. How can women over 15 like this?

Fuck yes, now Edward told her off for her own good. If the movies ended here, that would be fucking awesome! #twilight #newmoon

Is this when she goes into that debilitating depression and doesn’t want to live anymore? :)

Forcing myself to watch Twilight, part 1

18 September, 2010 1 comment

My nephew and his girlfriend has been telling me that I’m not allowed to whine about Twilight being piece of trash movies or books until I either watch or read them. It doesn’t matter if the general consensus of everything I’ve read about them is that both the movies and books suck ass in every conceivable way. So I’m watching the movies. I caught the first one, Twilight, yesterday. Just for fun I decided to tweet my reactions the whole way through. Here they are, all of them. Just click this post to expand it and see all of them.

Decided that I should watch Twilight and give it a shot. 6:28 in and I’m already annoyed by the horribly bad characterization. #twilight

Paused the movie, as soon as I got it going again, that annoying Asian dude actually said “chillax”. Kill him! #twilight

If you want to see GOOD characterization and amazing portrayal of alienation at school, watch Bang Bang You’re Dead w/ Ben Foster #twilight

Worthless fucking piece of trash movie, but I will endure. #twilight

Charlie Brooker’s columns and shows

13 September, 2010 1 comment

Charlie Brooker is a guy I started watching and reading over the summer. I downloaded all the episodes of his shows Screenwipe, Gameswipe and Newswipe and after watching those and really appreciating his dry sarcasm, I found out that he writes colums here and there. Checking them out, he’s now in my RSS reader and I read everything he writes religiously. It feels like he writes directly to me, but of course he doesn’t. But that’s how you know someone is a good writer for you, obviously.

His latest column, about Google Instant, is chock full of his usual sarcastic banter and comical observations about life in 2010. You should really check it out, and while you’re at it, go check out Screenwipe and Newswipe as well. Screenwipe takes an analytical, yet comical, look at TV and how it works. One episode can break down children’s TV into its different components while another goes through budgets and how gameshows are made. All the while he’s commenting with exceptionally witty remarks from his own living room, often being very self-deprecating towards himself and the society he chooses to live in. Newswipe, on the other hand, looks at the current events in news and I’d say that it’s like a British and way meaner version of The Daily Show.

As far as his points in the column go, I totally agree with him, and I think I’m going to try out that Pomodoro technique. I have a bunch of writing and other projects that I want to get done and even though my productivity has gone up, I still want to do more.

I leave you with my favorite bit from Newswipe, Charlie Brooker on the anatomy of a news report.

Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal

I used to read quite a lot of webcomics and even though I still read a few of them, my current list is a shadow of what it’s been through the years. I should probably check back with some of them or compile a list or something, but for now, I just want to recommend one of my current favorites. I’ve been reading it for about a year or so and it’s just my kind of humor.

I give you: Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal

It’s nerd comics at its best, up there with XKCD. For example, this strip (click the picture for full size) was published today and it’s a great view on the nerd category of grammar. Since I’m a grammar nerd, I love this one a lot, but I like the ones about physics, time paradoxes or whatever it may be. It’s not very often that I read an update and then don’t laugh.

It’s exactly the kind of dry, biting wit that I like so much and Zach Weiner, its creator, isn’t afraid to make fun of anyone or anything. He also makes a video sketch series which is a bit hit or miss, but sometimes he hits a home-run. Take a look at this video called Dating Solutions and you’ll see one of the golden ones.
